WINDHOEK – This year’s edition of the prestigious Namibia Sports’ Awards will take place on 26 October in the capital.
The Namibia Sports’ Awards are presented annually to deserving sports persons who have attained outstanding achievements and contributed significantly towards Namibia’s quest for sporting excellence.
The Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) launched the 2012 event here on Tuesday, during which Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) handed over a cheque of N$350,000 towards hosting of the occasion.
During the launch, the chairperson of the Namibia Sports’ Awards Committee, Piet du Plooy, announced that entries for the awards would commence on Tuesday this week and run until 30 September.
He said the guest speaker this year would be a world-famous basketball player from the United States.
Du Plooy did not want to reveal his name, only saying that he will disclose the identity of the sports personality at a later stage as well as the availability of tickets.
He, therefore, called on the different sports’ organisations and associations to nominate the ‘right’ candidates for the awards.
The sports associations eligible to enter nominees under their different sports codes include the Namibia Women in Sport Association (NAWISA), the Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC) and the Tertiary Institutes’ Sports Association of Namibia (TISAN).
They can enter nominees for basketball, bowling, cricket, gymnastics, shooting, football, swimming, equestrian sports, fastball, motor sports, seawater angling, soaring (paragliding and hang-gliding) and volleyball.
The awards also cover tennis, table tennis, athletics, netball, boxing, badminton, hockey, jukskei, rugby, softball, waterskiing, wrestling, endurance riding, cycling, darts, golf, archery, chess, freshwater angling, karate, sailing, saddle horse riding and squash.
