Nekundi endorsed as SPYL Secretary

28 August 2015

NEWS 28 AugustThe Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) was thrown into further turmoil on Thursday after Veikko Nekundi and Eddie Kafita both claimed to be in charge of the youth wing.

Nekundi was endorsed as acting Secretary by a Central Committee (CC) meeting held in the capital on Thursday.

The SPYL CC is said to have instructed Nekundi to call a NEC meeting within the next seven days, in order to discuss their work and progress in their various portfolios.

Nevil Itope was unanimously elected as Secretary of Information and Mobilization, a position that was left vacant following the resignation of Job Amupanda in November last year.

The CC meeting is said to have been boycotted by the majority of the SPYL National Executive Committee (NEC) members.

In a brief interview on Thursday afternoon, Kafita, who was installed as the acting Secretary of the youth wing following the suspension of former Secretary Elijah Ngurare, maintained that he was still in charge.

He said the CC meeting was unconstitutional and that only NEC has the authority to call the meeting.

“NEC has scheduled a meeting to take place on 12 September 2015. At that meeting we plan to discuss various issues such as the agenda for the central committee meeting and set a date,” Kafita said.

Kafita further said that they had communicated all this information to the mother body, through the office of the secretary general.

He observed that while there are people who might not like them, at the very least their positions should be respected.
