“Sara Naanda has been suspended with full pay, pending finalisation of investigations into allegations of wrongdoing, inter alia, insubordination of Board instruction,” a statement from the company said.
The board further announced that it had appointed Hippy Tjivikua the Executive: Strategy & Stakeholder Management, to act as MD of the railway parastatal until further notice.
A local daily reported earlier this week that the MD had already been served with a suspension letter on Monday, when she was summoned to appear before the board at their meeting.
She was also given the opportunity to convince the board within 24 hours of receiving her letter why she should not be suspended. It remains unclear at this stage whether she refused that option or her reasons were unsatisfactory to the board.
The Windhoek Observer reported over a month ago that the board, which had only been in office for four months, appeared to be manoeuvring to oust Naanda in a similar fashion to the way the board of Air Namibia suspended its MD Theo Namases.
This time the board started by stripping Naanda of certain powers, such as the signing rights to major contracts, and excluding her from board meetings.
