Karuaera a national hero

02 October 2013

The late Reverend Bartholomeus Karuaera has been conferred the honour of a national hero by President Hifikepunye Pohamba. The announcement was made in a media statement by the Minister of Presidential Affiars, Albert Kawana on Thursday.

Karuaera will be given a State funeral on Saturday at the Pioniers Park cemetery.

A memorial service will be held at Parliament Gardens on Friday.

All national flags in Namibia will fly at half-mast from Thursday until the funeral on Saturday as a symbol of mourning.

Reverend Karuaera died on 22 September 2013 at the age of 93.

He was a retired presiding elder and preacher of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church.

President Pohamba and Founding President Sam Nujoma are expected to deliver tributes at the funeral of the late Karuaera, who was among one of the first petitioners to the United Nations for Namibia’s independence from South African occupation.
