Former cop facing murder charges gets bai
08 February 2019
lA 32-year-old former police officer, who is accused of murdering his girlfriend at Koës in November last year, was granted bail of N$4,000 in the Keetmanshoop Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
The accused, Paul Rooi, appeared before Magistrate Melissa Mungunda, who postponed his case to 19 February for further police investigations.
During his first court appearance on 05 November, Rooi was denied bail out of fear that he might interfere with state witnesses and because police investigations were still at an early stage.
However, during a hearing on 06 February, prosecutor Joas Neemwatya told the court that the state no longer opposed the granting of bail to the accused.
“We have received a letter from the deceased’s family that they no longer oppose the granting of bail and that they see no reason for the accused not to be granted bail,” Neemwatya informed the court.
Rooi was granted bail on condition that he surrenders his travelling documents to the investigating officer and that he does not obtain any travelling documents.
The accused was also asked not to interfere with police investigations and state witnesses, and to report to the Karasburg Police Station every Monday between 09h00 and 19h00.
It is alleged that Rooi and his girlfriend, Marna Hanse, had a fight in front of a club at the village on the night of 01 November 2018.
Friends took Hanse home, where her family discovered that she was bleeding from the mouth. She was taken to the clinic where she later died.
Rooi was represented by Louis le Grange during his bail application. - NAMPA
