Exciting line-up for Jazz Fest

OLD Mutual Namibia has officially announced the names of the artists who will perform at the Windhoek Jazz Festival on Friday 27 July.
Previously known as the “Old Mutual Jazz Encounters”, the insurance giant officially handed the jazz fest over to the City of Windhoek on 12 June.
The organisers announced the names of the artists that would perform at an intimate dinner party held at the 99fm Playhouse Theatre.
Speaking at the event, the Mayor of the City of Windhoek Elaine Trepper said people should not see the event as a commodity but rather as common good.
She said everyone should be ready to support the various arts in the city using their resources in common.
Expressing the city’s commitment to the festival, the mayor said that the expected growth of the event represented a positive contribution to the whole community.
There were two preliminary jazz-off competitions held on 23 and 30 June in which prospective jazz artists could enter.
The winners of the competitions will perform at the jazz fest.
For this year’s festival, the City of Windhoek decided to give members of the public the opportunity to vote on who they thought were the best artists to entertain them at the festival.
The jazz-off had two main categories, one for the established artists and the other for the newcomers.
The public chose Adora, Lize Ehlers, Ugly Creatures and Major 7’s in the category of established artists while Chillin in the Park, Denise and the Pull Bit Band won in the latter category.
Shishani Vranckx, whom people often describe as Namibia’s Tracy Chapman, and the winner of Battle of the Bands will be the local headlining act performing at the jazz fest.
Old Mutual also used the opportunity to announce what international artist would perform alongside the local acts.
South African multi-platinum, award-winning songbird Lira will feature as the first headlining act that will perform at the concert followed by Selaelo Selota whose album “Painted Faces” also achieved platinum faces.
Tickets to the jazz fest became available at Computicket from 30 July. The festival will take place at the Hage Geingob Stadium on 3 November 2012.
