The country’s biggest business grouping, the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI), is moving ahead with its plans to host the country’s premier fishing sector event, the Namibia International Fishing Expo.
The event, which was mooted last year, is meant to showcase the country’s blue economy, with latest data from the Namibia Statistics Agency showing that fish exports generated over N$8.9 billion in 2017 and N$2.8 billion in the third quarter of 2018.
“We started the engagement process last year with other chambers in the region and abroad, and they are very excited about the opportunity to have a firsthand account of the opportunities that exist in the local blue economy. We have already received the support of the Namibian Fishing Association,” NCCI Acting Chief Executive Officer, Charity Mwiya, said.
She said the decision to host the event was driven by the need to create investment opportunities for the sector, while showcasing how government, through the fisheries ministry has allowed the industry to contribute positively to the economy.
“The ministry of fisheries’ efforts have not gone unnoticed, where it has spearheaded the policy of value addition in the sector and this has allowed for increased employment opportunities for locals in the value chain, and this is something we need to share with the world and this Expo will create the platform,” Mwiya said.
“The NCCI has been privileged to have been part of the Presidential business delegations and we have also used that opportunity to market the event.”
According to the NCCI, the event is expected to bring together over 300 delegates from the region and beyond, who all have an interest in the country’s fishing sector.
A fundraising gala dinner bringing together all players and stakeholders in the sector will be held at a date yet to be announced.
