Volleyball  For All  bursts at the seams

The 2017 edition of the DTS Windhoek Draught Volleyball For All tournament, which is the biggest social volleyball event in the entire South African Development Community (SADC) region, was played at the DTS sports grounds last Saturday, with Total Namibia emerging as the overall victors.
Organisers of the 34-year-old tourney said discussions were still ongoing to possibly change the format of the competition from a one to a two-day event, so they can accommodate more teams than the current maximum of 240.
DTS Club Manager and organiser of the Volleyball For All tournament, Karin Curschmann, confirmed to the Windhoek Observer that for three years in a row now, a record 240 teams had participated, while about 3,000 spectators had flocked to the event for the past two years.
Curschmann said that there have been discussions around possibly changing the format of the competition, but that nothing concrete had been decided at this stage.
She said Windhoek Draught had pumped N$200,000 into this year’s spectacle, which was used to cover the costs of the event, which included purchasing the nets and balls, and hiring the umpires and announcers.
Other sponsors included individuals and companies.
A total of 662 games were played last weekend, with Total Namibia taking gold, while Die Pauker took silver and Spikoholics bronze.
French Polony ended fourth.
Teams consisted of six players, with at least two women players mandatory for each team.
The winners of the event do not receive prize-monies, but are instead awarded medals, promotional gifts and various hampers from the different sponsors.
The event kicked off at 08h00 and the last match ended just after 18h00. Curschmann said the teams that took part this year were all from Windhoek and were mostly sponsored by companies, with a handful of private teams.
She noted that most companies use the event as a team-building enhancer for their employees.
“It was an extremely successful, fun-filled day and one of the best Volleyball For All events ever. It is an annual event, since for 34 years in succession, not even one year was skipped, to date.
“Windhoek Draught has been the main sponsor for many years now, among the many other smaller sponsors that keep coming through each year.
“As 240 teams is the absolute limit we can accommodate, it can only grow spectator and visitor-wise if we decide on breaking the tradition of holding it in one day.
“This annual event takes place every year on the first Saturday in February. The next Volleyball For All tournament will take place on 3 February 2018, so teams must start getting ready now already.
“We, from the DTS management, as well as the volleyball section, would like to thank all participants for entering this fun tournament, and all the spectators and visitors for their support.
“It was a harmonic, peaceful, fun-filled day, giving us organisers, referees and all the helpers, satisfaction after the action. A heartfelt gratitude to all the sponsors, without whom an event of this magnitude would not be possible,” added Curschmann.
