Amukwiyu wins in Nekongo’s turf

SWAPO’s Onayena District Conference on Tuesday evening chose youthful Oshikoto regional coordinator Armas Amukwiyu as its preferred candidate for the regional coordinator position, after he garnered 29 votes while his challenger Marx Nekongo could only get 20 votes.
In what was billed as one of the most important district conferences to date, Nekongo, who has chosen to align himself with President Hage Geingob, suffered a bruising defeat , with Amukwiyu now leading with six nominations out of the seven district elections held thus far.
Nekongo, a former Regional Councillor for Onayena Constituency in Oshikoto Region, was in the news in 2013, accused of discriminating and delaying the distribution of drought relief food to villagers in Oshendje.
In a report carried out by The Namibian at the time, Nekongo distributed food to some villages and left out others like Oshendje, an area which was heavily affected by drought.
“Why are some villages getting drought relief food while others are not? People at Oshendje are also hungry but we see trucks carrying bags of maize meal passing through our village yet we do not get anything. We are sick and tired of Nekongo's discriminatory ways,” The Namibian quoted one of the villagers as having said.
