12 June 2017 Author

Mother Alwina Petersen was born on 28th April 1928 at the Farm,!Haoxa-!nas on the outskirts of Gibeon.  She died on June 6th, 2017.

Her clan name is /On-oma - //Gawamu and her traditional name is “Chimom”. She was the great granddaughter of the late iconic leader Kaptein Hendrik Witbooi (!Nanseb) and elder sister of the late Kaptein Dr Reverend Hendrik Witbooi.
Mother Petersen was an icon and stalwart of the national liberation struggle, a guardian and a teacher of the /Khowesen customs, norms and values and a trusted and reliable advisor to the Kaptein and Traditional Council.
During the liberation struggle, Comrade Petersen was not only a leading figure of the SWAPO Women’s Council and the Branch in Gibeon District, but a fearless freedom fighter in the internal wing of SWAPO.
During the many times that Kaptein Dr. Hendrik Witbooi - Vice President of SWAPO was detained and imprisoned, or away on SWAPO missions abroad, Mother Petersen had the difficult responsibility to take care of the family household and the Royal Family and to provide advice to the Clan. Mother Petersen was entrusted with difficult assignments of the Clan and underground operations of the liberation movement, internally led by her brother, Reverend Dr. Hendrik Witbooi. Mother Petersen’s struggle credentials were confirmed with the award of a national veteran status by the Government of the Republic of Namibia.
Mother Petersen’s departure is a loss to her family, extended /Khowese Clan, the AME Church and the Namibian nation.
